• Black lines through ftelnet on web4 interface

From Dave@VERT/BOFHNET to All on Sun Jul 24 14:31:54 2022
    Hi All,
I've just started a new BBS - my first interaction with a BBS since the 90s, so I'm rusty.
I've got the web interface setup through web4, but the default image in the ftelnet box is broken up with black horizontal lines across it.
I can't for the life of me figure out exactly what is causing it. It should be visible at https://bofhnet.au
Seems to be consistent across browsers. It's only the default image. Once you connect via Telnet, it appears to display correctly.

Appreciate any hints I can get.
    Cheers!

looks like a "wrapping" issue of some kind to me.

Save the splash screen in 79 rows, not 80. That should fix it.

The stock screen works fine and should not require a sysop to re-save it with different dimensions. There's a different issue at hand here.

    Thanks digital man,
I think we're on the right track. I've tried a couple of combinations of methods to see what breaks.
If I grab the file and place it in situ, it's exactly the same. If I try to take the contents of the file and dump them in, I get a wall of text characters.

If I open up the file itself with something like "ee" (I'm on FreeBSD), I can see "^[" appearing frequently before anywhere that the file in the link above starts with "[" so it results in "^[[whatever"

OK, no problem, was just trying to help. When I logged into his website, it dindn't look like the stock synch.ans, so I was assuming he made his own ans file, that's why I suggested he resize it. I saw your answer later, and that made more sense.

Should be able to save 80-columns, just need to test what you're

I cheated by putting a clear screen with a different background in mine...

I've replaced the image with a crappy jpg to ansi conversion of a logo that I've mostly borrowed. It's done effectively the same thing at 80 wide.
I did try a conversion at 79 columns, but that just caused the whole thing to skew.

I realize that it should work in 80 columns, but I've seen
some that it won't. I checked out his website, and indeed it was displaying weardly, but it didn't seem to be the stock synch.ans that's setup for webv4, so that's why I reccomended him to try resaving it in 79 columns just to check it out. That was a workable solution for a friend of mine running webv4 in michigan. I run two splash screens in my webv4, one for the main bbs, and a different one for my game server. It took some doing, but I got it working. I just wish I could figure a way to save the ftelnet.js in the mods directory of webv4, but I can't, so I had to settle for saving the orig ftelnet.js in the webv4 in the libs directory as a different name, so I can refer back to it.

Yeah, I don't even know if/where my reg'd copy of TheDraw went over the years... haven't touched it in forever. I remember, I used to often
wind up saving, then tweaking the final output a bit to place the cursor exactly where I want it... usually saving block mode 79x23 for full

    wrapping slightly differently.

God, I hear you loud and clear. I wish I could do RIPscript. I've got the old RIP graphics program, and everytime I atempt to make a nice menu, I foul it all up by the time I put in all the mouse points and open text areas. That era just passed on by me very quick. I've always wanted to do full RIP on my Synchronet System, but always get to frustrated and give up. That's my old age talking, but it keeps me from doing a lot of things I like. I find my attention span getting shorter every year, with a lot more senior moments <BFG>

On a good note, I have to give a big Thank You and a lot of credit to Rob, Eric, and Echicken, as they have helped me in more ways than one with my feeble attempts at coding, and learning the right way to do things.

That is my kind of thinking, I like it. It's often those little things that make all of the difference.
I've taught a few academics valuable lessons in how to treat techs over the years. Usually with an audience. And the Helldesk has stories it passes down about me. I'm not even sure where half of it came from, but it sounds like me and memory is failing, so I mean, it might have happened. Maybe.

you dont even need pablo for .msg files. just use the conversion utility.

Does PD even edit those right? I don't think it helped me with .msg files at all.

    Yes: http://wiki.synchro.net/resource:ansi_editors#pablodraw

also pablo puts that stupid ass sauce into everything.

Agreed. I always have to vi that crap out.

Synchronet strips/ignores SAUCE records in display files automatically and even uses the metadata at times. It's not stupid.

From Hell usenet series that came out in the 1990s?

Indeed. I've been a fan of the Bastard for a long time. Simon helped me survive the hell desk and then given me plenty of great... problem solving... ideas as a sysadmin. It seems appropriate to help keep the spirit alive.

FWIW: the spirit is still live and well... BOfH is published on theregister on a regular basis... this one is the latest from this past friday...
