• Net issue

From Starstorm@21:3/140 to All on Wed Apr 7 14:53:49 2021
This is kind of a long shot, but I'm trying to narrow down an issue.

I joined a new net, HobbyNet, the guy who runs it is new at this and runs Wildcat and Internet Rex.

I can send packets out, but I get nothing back, not even a reply from
Areafix. Could there be something I'm doing wrong? I tried with, and without
a packet password. When I asked him if there is one, he said "I can't answer your question." Those were his actual words.

I'm wondering if I am wasting my time with this one, which stinks, I thought and still think it's an interesting idea.

I know there is Mystic systems in the nodelist, but I can't seem to connect
to them myself. I did send a Netmail, but I'm not entirely certain if my Netmail is working right at the moment, which is why I asked in General for someone to send me Netmail.

I think it's going to be a matter of finding what works between your two tossers. You'll need to hear from your link about any errors and compare with your setup.

I have no experience myself with a Wildcat link, but Irex works OK all around although it's not perfect.. :)

Your link is going to have to answer questions like "is there a password set for my node", and if he can't answer those questions your going to have a hard time.

The setup of links is not trivial and I can only suggest you keep on asking those questions and when you get an answer you can act on it.

    Howdy,

to them myself. I did send a Netmail, but I'm not entirely certain if my Netmail is working right at the moment, which is why I asked

You can always send a netmail to ping@21:3/100 - and you'll get an automatic reply. Since you are on Hub 3, the direct reply should confirm your system is working and be within a min or so.

If you send a ping to ping@21:2/116 - it'll be routed through the network and my BBS will reply - then you know the network is working for you. It'll probably take a little longer, but should be within a few mins (assuming 2/100 is up)...

I can send packets out, but I get nothing back, not even a reply from Areafix. Could there be something I'm doing wrong? I tried with, and without

Ok, if you are doing FTN (which sounds like you are) - both you and your Hub should agree on packet passwords (to have or not, and if you have, agree on what it is).

What really helps when diagnosing problems, is you get your upstream's log of the packet you send them - so you can see that a) you sent it out, and b) what the hub did with it when it got it.

OK, I am a member of HobbyNet now too. Mike is not very knowledgeable about running a FTN network. There should be NO packet password. You should only have

AREAFIX, FILEFIX and BinkP password. Try sending a netmail to AREAFIX @ 954:895/0 with your areafix password in the subject line and %LIST on line one and %HELP on line 2 and see if you get a reply. I have been getting packets from Mikes board so I know it will work for you when everything is set correctly.
