Hey thanks for this. Hope you don't mind that I grabbed it as well.

I have a separate problem of my own where Mystic is choking on a packet and it ran fine on my Ubuntu system.

    Opening ./9FC80759.PKT
    ./9FC80759.PKT Packet Type 2+ (prod: 0111, rev: 3.0) from 954:895/1 to 954:895/31
./9FC80759.PKT 00003A Corrupted Message Header (DateTime)

I preserved this and posted it to the Fidonet Mystic echo, where hopefully a more graceful failure can be included in a future version.

Interestingly, it's similar to the packet fang castro posted, both posted
by daryl stout, both on hobbynet and both have the off by 2 bytes thing
    in the message header.

There appears to be only one line in the PATH: 895/7 (daryl's node) is he
the hub for you two on hobby net?

    Strange.

No problem. Those were all put together by different folks so sysops could get a better idea of what is causing problems.

That looks like the same issue that fang-castro was seeing, maybe the same message. Something is bad about those packets.. it may or may not be the date.

I preserved this and posted it to the Fidonet Mystic echo, where

That would be a good thing. Should send a copy to the original node also so they know something is up. Something will need to be adjusted there also.

I would suggest that fix the tosser so if that happens it defaults to
    ALL.

Every tosser in use would need to be updated to do that and I don't think that will happen.

Packets are not very forgiving. They are mostly message text but they are binary files and all those bits & bytes must be correct or the show is off.

The best solution is to create those packets correctly in the first place or they will fail downstream differently for different tossers.

No, especially since the pktinfo isn't exactly right, the packet is corrupt, that was just the first thing it tripped up on (the fromusername wasn't null terminated) even if you changed from to ALL, it would then have tripped up on the to field being empty, the subject being empty and the entire message being empty because of no null termination between from, to and subject.

A tosser shouldn't attempt to fix a packet, the other tosser shouldn't create dodgy packets.

I think in this instance, mystic tosser needs to be fixed to not segfault on a dodgy packet, and Platnium Xpress or whatever hobby net is using needs to be fixed to not create dodgy packets in the first place.

Absolutely. If tossers were trying to fix errors we'd be in a hellofa mess.

Yep, a bad packet will trip everyone up all down the line.

Sounds like a stinky packet. Do you still have that packet to
    inspect?

I do. I've never inspected a packet; sounds devious. What can we find in it?

If we are lucky we can find and solve the issue. We don't want tossers just quitting like that.

If you can make that packet available on the web of ftp site I'll have a look and see if I can see any issues with it.

pktinfo tells me that the fromusername field is empty so the message
header is wrong. It is a corrupt packet.

It looks like the packet was written correctly, then re-written over two
    bytes off.

the Packet header ends 02 00 which should be (00 00) then is followed by
02 00 which is the start of the packed message header. Then each field is
    also offset by 2 bytes...

It looks like it's to David Smit? (I guess david smith) so the TO field
    should look like

    David Smith<NULL>

    but instead looks like

    DaDavid Smit

    The from looks like

    DaDaryl Stou

    When it should be

    Daryl Stout<NULL>

    And so on...

So while mystic should discard that packet as you say, more concerning is whatever the hub is running causing packets like that?

The message is FROM a synchronet system, but I suspect it's not
synchronet to blame but whatever is in between.

Hehe yep, it's an interesting puzzle though. I think the hobby net bbs is
a Wildcat board, so I guess one can't load up the source and see whats
going on. I don't even know who you'd go to to report a wildcat bug.

When I ran that packet through postie, it decided it was an empty netmail
and threw it away, probably not the best way to go either lol

Yeah, if it were a synchronet bug I would imagine it would be picked up

Sounds like a stinky packet. Do you still have that packet to inspect?\

    why
    would this happen?

    @fc
It happens due to bugs in the software, ie, not failing gracefully.

Sounds like a stinky packet. Do you still have that packet to
    inspect?\

    @al
Hopefully, but it sounds like he deleted it.

    @fc
If you didn't delete it, you could try sending it to james so he can find
the bug in mystic that the dodgy packet is triggering.

Also, I wouldn't mind taking a look at the packet too as I've been
battling similar problems in my software, would be good to test against.

I do. I've never inspected a packet; sounds devious. What can we find in it?

If we are lucky we can find and solve the issue. We don't want tossers just quitting like that.

If you can make that packet available on the web of ftp site I'll have a look and see if I can see any issues with it.

Probably a good idea to get that packet to g00r00 as well see he can see what is happening.
