I'm curious on the right way to credit any use of this type of pre-existing artwork. Is it ok to cut out an ad space leaving the rest of the art there
to drop in a menu in the new space, but leave the original artists signature? I've often wondered this, but never added any artwork because I don't want to create some sort of issue.

I'm not an artist, I don't want to pass of anyone elses art as mine in any
way, I just have no idea what qualifies as a appropriate way to use it and
    not upset folks.

Certainly open to thoughts on this.

I'd engage with artists on the Blocktonics FB page on this. In short I think no one likes having their work used without attribution but I too am not clear on what is acceptable use and what is not. It's likely going to differ a bit depending on who you talk with and what your thinking of doing. But if you put yourself in the place of the artist, imagine seeing 80% of your work on display with some of it missing, and it being used in a way / context that it was never designed for.

So yeah, the idea of displaying art as it was created is fine, but if you're wanting to co-opt some older art then I'd reach out to the ANSI artistic community to see if you can either engage with the original artist or get a steer on some possible alternative art you could use with less issues.

The really best way to go is to ask someone to draw something for you, you may end up paying them a commission (to be negotiated between you) but then you end up with something you want and it being created for the reasons you want to display/use it. Or, use a ANSI menu set like from ansi garden to achieve the same thing.

In sum, best to seek info/help rather than just use... it will save you angst down the track and show the artistic community you are mindful of them :)

    Hope this helps.

    Best, Paul

You shouldn't modify ANSI art by any artist or group.
You shouldn't borrow or cut & paste to 'create' something new.

I'm not an artist, I don't want to pass of anyone elses art as mine in
any way, I just have no idea what qualifies as a appropriate way to use
    it and not upset folks.

Get permission from the original artist.
You can ask to commission artwork, usually for money, by finding groups where they live today - Facebook, Discord, by watching the current art packs @ 16colo.rs... I follow Blocktronics, iMPURE, MistiGris and some demoscene/art #rooms on FB/Discord...

TBH, tho - most artists aren't jumping up and down to create art for $20 a screen. Its 2021, and we're all 50 years old. :P From what I've learned, you just have to be ar part of the scene... hang out, post msgs, meet people and sooner or later folks will WANT to draw for your projects.

To get started, ANSI Garden is a great place to grab a free pack, or purchase a custom theme. Luciano is one of the best ANSI artists in his own right... you won't go wrong by getting a theme from him.

There are some great NEW ways that you CAN cut and paste to design menus and ANSI art - Dark Systems BBS, ran by Aaron Graswell, has recently released 30+ ANSI packs that he's given to the community! You *can* edit and modify them any way you choose... you should grab all of those from his BBS, or mine - in my "Other ANSI Art" file area, I have all of those plus some other free ANSI packs that you CAN use.

Furthermore, who am I kidding - I have borrowed some artwork in the past. I try to stay below the year 2000, and certainly wouldn't use from artists who are still releasing art... you gotta get in the scene, open the packs released in 2o21 and meet the people involved...

    Hi,

I just bought a BBS Theme pack from Luciano at ANSI Garden, I paid a bit extra and got my BBS name added to the screens aswell.

He was great to deal with and had some good stuff to choose from.

I'll be going back to purchase some more in the future for sure!

    Cheers

Have you been on https://16colo.rs and had a look at all the artwork there? Luciano does do some really great work, was it a pre-designed pack or one designed specifically for your BBS?

    Hi Christian,

Yeah 16 colors has it all, I only wish I had that ability!

I bought one of lucianos pre designed packs with my BBS name added, I just wanted to add another theme to my current setup and he had something that suited well.

In future it would be cool to have something completly custom done if I ever make my system open to the public. For now I just enjoy messing around!

    Cheers
