Its a strategy game kind of like Trade Wars. I think it may have been released before Trade Wars actually.

Cool do you think its something people would like to play? I don't see a ton of attraction to my doors. most people get one use ANSiTV mod, MRC and read the network.

I had someone asking for it so I thought I'd give it a try. I do enjoy Trade Wars so it sounds fun.

When they first mentioned it I thought maybe it was a stock market game that I used to play but it wasn't that. I can't remember the name of the stock market game I used to enjoy but I sure wish I could find that one again!

Would it have been "Stocks On-Line Unlimited"?
I have v3.2, but it's on a 5.25. Don't even know if the disks are readable. Wish I could get an older machine wwith a 5.25 drive so I can get my door game installs off these disks and into my file system.

    That does sound real familiar!

I had a registered copy of the Pit on a 3.5 floppy drive and when I got back into the BBSing I tried to reload that one but the disk won't read. Unfortunately theres no way to retrieve my registration code from what I've been able to find. :( Sure wish we had had writable CD-ROMs back then!

Yes, I've seen that before. Just wish someone sold a an all-in-one drive unit like they do for 3.5's. Getting that, then having to track down the proper drive and drive enclosure. Far more work than I want to deal with. Not to mention: Why waste money on hardware that will get used for maybe an hour and then never again?

Would be easier if there were someone here locally that had an old machine that I could borrow for like an hour to copy these disks; that's all I need.

Yeah, that what I'm worried about. Had one of my old BBS' backed up on a tape, but when I went to restore it a few years ago the tape snapped when it tried to read it. :'( Really afraid that these disks are going to be damaged and end up being unreadable, especially after sitting in a storage building for many months.

Yeah Magnetic media is going to deteriorate sooner or later. Even CD's will flake eventually. redundancy is the only real solution. Not to mention have backups off site to avoid location risk.

Have you searched to see if the author is still around? Maybe they will release the key generator for it. Many old school game developers have done that.

    Just a thought.

I tried to contact someody about replacing my license of the Pit some time ago. I was told that they didn't have a way to regenerate the codes anymore.

Redundancy is only part of the solution. You need a plan to refresh that media periodically - and to move it to supported media.

I remember when they were cleaning out the data center where I worked. There was a box of disk packs that were marked "Retain until <5 more years>". But the problem is that they were for an Honeywell DPS6 - which at that time was only seen in museums.

Needless to say, they tossed them. They did make cool, but really large, windshimes, though. 8)

Until I can get the game files off the floppy, I don't even know who the author was.

I had a 3.5 USB drive, ,but it has vanished. I have yet to find one that is 5.25 though. And I really don't want to buy something that I'm only going to use once.

I wonder if there is some kind of service you could use to get it. Here there was a service that would copy VHS to DVD, floppys to USB stick seems like a worth while extension of that.

Then again, it may be more trouble than it's worth, I guess not many floppy disks live that long.
