  • Cones of Dunshire

    Anyone play the Cones of Dunshire? I really enjoyed it, but it's hard to get 8 players together. Plus everyone always wants to be the Maverick and you never get 2 Warriors, which as we know all makes for a better game.

    Next year the sequel, Cones of Dunshire: The Adventure Continues: The Winds of Tremorrah is supposed to come out. I'm pretty psyched about it. I just hope the Gryzzl guys don't ruin it.

    Wasn't that the one from parks and rec? ha I've never played it, but with my board game collection already filling up a dedicated games room I'm on hiatus from buying anything else...

    haha. Yeah. I was wondering if anyone would catch that.

    Apparently the show paid the Catan guys to make a real version of the game which was used in the final episode. It was later released as a show exclusive at some Game con. Apparently the rules were impossibly complicated, as required!

    yeah i remember reading about it on the baord games subreddit when it came out, i think it was a kickstarter as well!

    The rules were a perfect illustration of some modern games, where so much gameplay scope-creep means that when the games released you've just narrowed your audience to small groups of hardcore board gamers with a lot of time.

    Already with complicated euro-games we can't play some of them until my wife has gone through the rules and then summarised it to us predigested like a mother bird spitting chewed up worm into the hungry chicks mouths ----------------------

    At my former work there were lots of board games in the lunch room, and people would play them during lunch or after work. To me they were always so complicated, with every player needing multiple cards, tokens, coins, cards, figures, etc.

    It seems like the newer board games, I don't even know what to call them... strategy board games(?), are just video games converted into cardboard form. All the complicated rules work fine in a computer game which does the work for you, but are impossible... or very difficult... to track in physical form.

    Yeah, a lot CAN be payed with pen and paper, but you really need a companion app on your phone to do the heavy lifting for you or there'd be a lot of downtimes between turns calculating things. i like alchemists for example, but one player's role would just be working the game engine without the app! same with things like mansions of madness etc

    Since lockdown my games criteria have radically changed anyway, separated from my regular gaming group suddenly all the 2 player capable games I have are the only thing that hits the table since it's just me and the missus ----------------------
