End Of The Line BBS has a new experimental direct dial number

    +1 469 200 3550 (Dallas, USA) Terminal 8N1 or Viewdata 7E1

    +44 33 0117 1548 (UK, Local Rate) Terminal 8N1 or Viewdata 7E1

Please feel free to give it a try.

Thanks to Keyop at Magnum BBS - you can now dial into End Of The Line BBS from other cities using his dialup gateway.

    Line 1 - POTS +44 1484 320007 (Huddersfield, UK)

Interesting. I briefly read somewhere about dialup gateways, but how do they actually work?

    How is that working out?

I wonder how dialup can be made new and relevant again.

Interesting. I briefly read somewhere about dialup gateways, but how do they actually work?

Well, with mine, here's the setup.

I have a USB hub connected to a Linux box with two USR USB modems. These are plugged into a Grandstream VOIP adaptor, one line configured with the US number, and on the UK.

On the linux box I have two processes running that listen on each tty for an incoming call, it's actually using sexpots, the Synchronet External POTS systems or something like that.

This can be configured in two modes, the first is that it'll open a tcp/ip connect to whatever host/port you want.

The second is that it can display a menu and you can pick what you want to connect to. This was added by DigitalMan at my request. This allows me to run aboth a regular terminal and a viewdata board using the same line.

Keyops is just a login to a Linux server which then does a telnet out.

Synchronet doesn't directly handle dialup connections so there is something in between and it seems to work quite well.

    How is that working out?

No idea, to be honest. :)

I wonder how dialup can be made new and relevant again.

When most people are using cell phones or VOIP, not very, but for those stuck without any other option but copper, it's still one way to get information. It's also good for people in countries where their internet is censored and they want some way to exchange messages.

    Thanks for the interest,
    Nigel

But with the demise of dialup lines more and more everywhere,
and the scarcity of modems, I doubt that most people would even
    be aware of the option.

I know at least one person who uses dialup to access internet
stuff. It's only $8/mo for them. Nobody can seem to reach them
over the phone since the line is in use on internet most of the
day. But I think they just stick to Facbook or something and
are unaware of BBSes availble through the inernational
switching that you provide or by telnet.

It's a niche market, but you never know. I'm going to try it for a year
    and see how it goes.

    It's a matter of edutcation.
