    Hi All!

    I do not know if you have heared of it.
    But there is a great project to recreate the commodore 65.
    (including a perfect c64 mode).

    They want to produce actual c65 with housing and everything.

    But you can already play with it with a USB Keyboard on a FPGA board.
    The downside ... it is expensive.
    They have not yet announced the price, but I am sure it will be hefty.

    They are using the Nexys4 DDR FPGA board which costs 300+ EUR.
    On the upside it is a great board also to use for other FPGA learning things!

    I wonder why they'd bother with all that? A Pi will do it with VICE and there must be off shoots of the original 6502 that would do it as well - So why recreate a chip with an expensive FPGA? Easy enough to make the housing and use off the shelf keyboard and ports adding USB & Ethernet since they are there. It would take some work, but be a lot cheaper and be able to do more. The c64 was popular because it was cheap and had cheap add ons.

    Hi bcw142!

    14 May 2017 05:37, from bcw142 -> Richard Menedetter:

    I wonder why they'd bother with all that?

    Because they wanted to have something that they can touch ;)

    The same reason why I have a commodore 128 with a 1541 Ultimate II and I am not
    using a Raspberry with VICE.

    A Pi will do it with VICE and there must be off shoots of the original 6502 that would do it as well - So why recreate a chip with an
    expensive FPGA?

    Because you can ;))
    And because they have learned very much from doing so.
    Actually they came up with a great design that even has a Hypervisor ;)

    I am thinking of buying a FPGA devboard ... just to play around.
    There are some nice small ones (25-45 USD).

    But then again ... you can go big, and buy the Nexys that the Mega65 guys used ...
    but 300 EUR is too much for me for playing around a few hours, and then throw it into the corner :))))

    Are you using an entire build or just installing VICE from a package on your raspi?
    Maybe another method altogether?

    Both ;) On Raspbian I add it as a package, on RetroPie it's built in to that package. I use it the same on both. Also add it to x86 systems at times.
