• Modern Day TEMPEST Surveillance

On a recent military documentary they were boasting that they could detect a golf ball sized ping from several miles away on the latest and greatest iteration of the military's radar systems, This would leave one to conclude that the TEMPEST technology has improved along with the radar technoogy, as they are similar. It is thought to now be trivial to capture screen shots of computer monitors from several hundred feet away. It has likely gotten less expensive and more stable of a reception of computer screen's display.

If you're not familiar with TEMPEST technology, then let me explain it in simple terms. TEMPEST is short for "Transient Electromagnetic Pulse Emissions Standard," which is a rating system of how secure monitors and other electronics are against data reconstruction of signals emitted from both analog and digital systems. Faraday Cages are boxes in which you can dump your emitting devices to keep them from emitting their radiations. When people have sensitive conversations they may dump all of their cell phones and PDAs into a Faraday Cage to mitigate the risk of information leakage.

In short, TEMPEST is still a thing, using Software Defined Radio in combination with a radio scanner it is trivial to intercept what is displayed on your monitor, be it either a TV or computer's screen. With the advancement of one technology comes advancements in other similar technologies, and this is the case with TEMPEST Surveillance.

    Cheers!

Remember TEMPEST is (a group of) standards to reduce technical surveilance exploitation.

Important, it is not the whole thing.
