• Backups and Where to Store Things

Backups should be done regularly. One copy of the backup being at your home, one copy at a friend's home, and one copy hidden somewhere that is secret.
All backups should be encrypted so that you can be sure that the storge media has not been tampered with. The backups should be placed in spots where its not obvious that a person would place their things. I will be uploading an
old book on secret hiding places in the FileBone (the file section of this Echomail Network) for you to go over. For small backups I prefer to simply burn the stuff to DVDs. In the event of an EMP or lightning strike the DVDs will remain intact as DVDs function by etching of light, whereas a tape
backup uses magnetic recording that is susceptable to full erasure when in contact with high powered radio frequency. In truth they are probably more susceptable to this EMP/HERF (high energy radio frequency) than you might think. I have destroyed a hard drive while walking around a highly carpeted room and touching the drive. There was a spark and the drive was no more.
If you've got a server, servicing stuff that is important to you then I'd backup regularly, such as once per week. If you really have a lot to back up I'd suggest buying a 5200 rpm NAS hard drive and place the drive in a faraday cage. A Faraday Cage is a box that is shielded from EM
(electro-magnetic) radiation, so even if there was a disaster in the skies above or a weapon directed at your computer room your kit would still survive.
