Never mind "Do you, Sysop...take this BBS, to be your lawfully wedded spouse??". <G>

Or as we can relate to...

"Do you, Ham, take Radio, to be your lawfully wedded spouse??". <G>

For me, it's both...I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Originally,
both were in bedroom...what a way to get "doubly screwed". <G>

What's more frustrating on the ham radio nets for me now, is these
stations who will NOT pay attention to, or follow net protocol (never
mind directions of Net Control). They think it's the ultimate crime/sin,
etc. if they are not the first one to checkin to a net (net control is
#1 on the log regardless), if they're not in the first group of
checkins, or if they miss a net. I've observed it on RF and VoIP.

For me personally, if I can't run a net where I'm scheduled to be Net Control, due to weather, internet, health, or other issues, I try to get
a replacement. But, if it's for a regular "bean for the count checkin",
if I miss that net, "it's no big deal". Some days (and nights), I don't
feel like doing much with the BBS, and/or ham radio.

Yet, when you tell folks that there are other things in life besides
BBSing and Ham Radio (never mind Facebook), they look at you like you've
    gone mad!! :P

Haha, that was the case for me many years ago, but not the case today either.

What's more frustrating on the ham radio nets for me now, is these stations who will NOT pay attention to, or follow net protocol (never

Yeah, that is annoying. When the SO-35 parrot (simplex) repeater was active around the year 2000, I actually got more contacts by waiting until the last few seconds of an uplink window, after the rush to be first was over. :) I worked out a strategy that was incredibly effective at getting contacts. It involved more listening than anything, and worked like this:

Uplink: Put out a quick call - often being last worked best.

Downlink: Hear yourself come back down. If not successful, this is the end of the attempt, retry on next uplink.

Uplink: If you were successful getting in on the last cycle, DO NOT TRANSMIT (you'd QRM those trying to reply to you).

Downlink: Listen for any replies to you.

For me personally, if I can't run a net where I'm scheduled to be Net Control, due to weather, internet, health, or other issues, I try to

Yeah mostly the same here. The main exception is the local club net, because IF I check in, I am mobile and only have a few minutes to take part. :)

Yet, when you tell folks that there are other things in life besides BBSing and Ham Radio (never mind Facebook), they look at you like

Yeah, that is annoying. When the SO-35 parrot (simplex) repeater was active TL>around the year 2000, I actually got more contacts by waiting until the last TL>few seconds of an uplink window, after the rush to be first was over. :)

When Milt, K9QZI, of the Illinois D-Star Net (I got to meet him at the Huntsville Hamfest last year), had a problem with the DPlusReport, and
said "I can only get checkins one at a time" (for most, but not all

I do early checkins on the nets I run, either D-Star or

with the digital modes is that when you key up, your callsign shows
up...you can't hide!! Now, on Echolink, if they're keying in as a single
user node, you see their callsign...but, if they're on a link, repeater,

    are.

I was never much on contesting...although I know there a lot of hams
who "live and die by it".

BBS in the background, while the crowd thinned out.

    That works. :)

It was my last net for the evening, and after eating a late dinner (I
usually eat after all my nets are over), I had to let the food digest a
    bit, before heading to bed.

True, but all have a place. :)

This is true...but, the technology has gotten so daunting, that it's
    almost dizzying.

Hahaha, well, I'm of a different breed, destined to be physically active, as TL>well as active on radio and the BBSs. My "toys" purchase list is an eclecti TL>mix of radio, computer and sporting hardware! :D

Besides doing the nets and VE testing with ham radio, I also am
involved with square dancing (more "offline than online"), and of
course, with the BBS. I can switch hobbies to avoid burnout, but I try
not to overdo it with any one of them.

I have noticed that if I try to work on the BBS when I'm tired (like
right now <BG>), I'm asking for trouble. So, after I finish the QWK
packet, it's nap time before the nets, and dinner. I eat one big meal a
day (usually lunch), then have a light dinner. It's rare that I eat
breakfast. But, after all, H.A.M. stands for "Have Another Meal" (hi

Me either, too much sitting around. Sure, I tried contesting, even did well a few times, just not my thing. :)

This is true...but, the technology has gotten so daunting, that it's almost dizzying.

    Love it. :)

Besides doing the nets and VE testing with ham radio, I also am
involved with square dancing (more "offline than online"), and of
course, with the BBS. I can switch hobbies to avoid burnout, but I try
not to overdo it with any one of them.

Yeah mine all run in parallel, BBSing now, yoga earlier, training in a few hours after work lol

I have noticed that if I try to work on the BBS when I'm tired (like right now <BG>), I'm asking for trouble. So, after I finish the QWK packet, it's nap time before the nets, and dinner. I eat one big meal a day (usually lunch), then have a light dinner. It's rare that I eat breakfast. But, after all, H.A.M. stands for "Have Another Meal" (hi

I'm not much of a foodie, and I'm burned out on that subject by the ridiculous number of food/cooking shows on TV these days. :) I'm the guy you'll hear talking about sport (as in doing, not watching LOL). :)

    Indeed, we do.

Got a few major things happening here soon.

First, the NBN upgrade is in a few days (yaaay!) - going from a slow DSL line to 100/40. :)

Secondly, I have a bit of hardware on order and in transit from OS. Among the hardware are a wifi router/bridge, which I will be using to bridge wifi to Ethernet, so wired Ethernet devices can work on wifi networks (like the 4G router I have). Also on the way is a SharkRF OpenSpot, which will give me access to D-STAR, DMR and Fusion networks. When combined with the bridge and 4G wifi, I will have mobile digital capability. :)

On other news, seems CB is in a bit of a revival down here. Lots of people are dusting off their old CBs, and there is a very active Facebook group for Aussie CBers. I haven't put my 27 MHz gear back on the air yet (need an antenna), but I do have 2 SSB CBs kicking around. I also have a small fleet of UHF CBs, which I use mostly for public events and as a liaison channel for school foxhunts. Yep, I've been giving some kids experience in radio foxhunting, they love it so much that next week (last week of school term) is a fun week of foxhunting for the kids I work with. :)

    Dan,

Thanks Daryl. So why the switch to Synchronet?

The FIDONet tosser, VFIDO, kept generating MSGID fields that caused
other BBS's (especially Synchronet) to DELETE most all posts as
    duplicates.

But, Synchronet also allows me to run non-fossil doors, without a
special workaround...especially the DreamNet doors by Andy Stewart and
Jimmy Rose...the Ham Radio doors by the late Dave Perry...plus version 2
of Trade Wars 2002 and Trade Wars Services. While I got L.O.R.D. 4.06
setup (fossil), I haven't been able to get L.O.R.D. II or Complete New
World to work as of yet.

I did figure out how to get a program to run under Synchronet with the Doorway program (originally done by Marshall Dudley, now done by Mike
Ehlert). This is mainly with the Today In History program, originally
done by Patrick Kincaid. Instead of its default event files, I set up
    things for:

    1) Weather History (data after 1990 is partial).
    2) Pun history (from the book, "Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down", by former
Miami, Florida WTVJ Meteorologist Bob Weaver).
    3) Bloopers (from various joke books).
    4) Bible Verse (a different verse each day).
    5) Burma Shave Ads (searched the internet, and got one for each day.
    6) Random Quotes (from various doors, and QWK Taglines).

I also finally figured out how to get the "You Might Be A Redneck"
deal to work as a door. Unfortunately, Homeward Bound BBS, where one got
free registration of the door, is apparently no longer online...so you
can't register it anymore. In a lot of the sayings, Jeff Foxworthy would
    be proud. <G>

Another reason for the switch is that it automates QWK Networking,
where I don't have to poll each system. However, I may have to switch
FIDONet hubs...the system uses ZIP format, but it's recognized by PKZIP/PKUNZIP, and NOT by ZIP/UNZIP. So, I'm losing a ton of FIDONet
    Echomail.

From what I've read, the OpenSpot is better, and doesn't need a computer, it is a standalone solution. You do need a web capable device on the same network to configure it, but once configured, it's standalone. Anyway, I'm loving the OpenSpot, great investment. I leave it DMR mode on the Australian BrandMeister server.

I know the DV4Mini had audio issues at some stage. I went for the OpenSpot, because it looked like the best overall package for a hotspot and is totally self contained. It doesn't require a host computer (not even a Pi). The other one I'm interested in is the MMDVM, which I would like to use to build a multimode DV repeater. The MMDVM runs on an Arduino Due and does require a host computer as well (like a Pi), but it's more flexible, being a modem only, and requiring external radios to transmit and receive. The MMDVM can act as a true duplex repeater, you just have to configure it properly and use two radios set to the appropriate frequencies.

    Tony,

I know the DV4Mini had audio issues at some stage. I went for the OpenSpot,

I had looked at the WinDV setup, as the dongle with it would allow connections to the XRF Reflectors on D-Star. The original DV Dongle, and
the DV Tool software (the latter from Robin Cutcliffe, AA4RC), does NOT
allow access to the XRF Reflectors.

But, when I tried to get the software to work under Windows 7, it
crashed. I'd like to be sure it works, before I shell out $150 for the
new dongle from moencomm.com -- but, I'm on the air nightly with
    nets...either Packet Via Telnet, Echolink, D-Star, or D-Rats...so, I'm
not hurting for "new nets". However, if I wanted to add the XRF Nets to
the "Selected D-Star Nets" file I started awhile back, I'd like to
    verify them first.

At the time, many of the nets at www.dstarinfo.com had out of date information, because those who originally supplied the data, weren't
supplying updates to Ed, WA4YIH. So, that's why I started a new file for
    D-Star and D-Rats Nets...but of the modes I use, D-Star and D-Rats are
the ones that I use the most...because when you transmit, your callsign
shows up -- you can NOT hide on D-Star.

    Tony,

Haha the cookie monster strikes again. :)

There's a utility in my files area called "Cookie Monster". It was
designed for Windows 95 through XP (not sure if it works under Windows 7
or not)...but you had two options with it:

    1) Delete the cookies from your web browsing. Upon doing so, you'd hear
the sound effect "Yum! Yum! Yum! Cookie!".

    2) Empty the Recycle Bin, and you'd hear the sound effect of a flushing
    toilet.

There may even be a file which will do the toilet flush for the
emptying of the recycle bin, and change the icon of it to a toilet.

Shouldn't be too hard to do.

    here.

Over 80,000 acres and 90% contained. I have been "home" for 9 days now and
one of my co-workers came home last night, been gone for 6 days.

For us, we still have more than two months of fire season. Due to all the
rain we got this past winter, there is a LOT of tall grass, which feeds the fire into the brush and timber.

We had some thunder storms blow through yesterday and last night with
mostly dry lightning. It is still cloudy with the expected temperature
around 103F with high humidity. Yucky!

Stayed home today so the radio club's Internet can be installed at the
house (now two incoming here via wire and one via RF). The AC was running
when I got up at 0400... I dread to see the Edison bill. 8-O

Decent fire, all you need now is some good rain.

For us, we still have more than two months of fire season. Due to all
the rain we got this past winter, there is a LOT of tall grass, which feeds the fire into the brush and timber.

We're having a dry winter. Driest June on record, second driest first 2 months of winter on record. Not as much growth this year, but still a lot of stuff from last year, and the dry conditions could lead to a nasty fire season.

We had some thunder storms blow through yesterday and last night with mostly dry lightning. It is still cloudy with the expected temperature around 103F with high humidity. Yucky!

*whew* We had what I believe was our coldest day of the year yesterday - light rain and a mere 8C for a maximum. Stood out in an otherwise mild winter, and with the cold and rain, our track training session was cancelled. I had to make do with a treadmill at the local gym. A few days ago, it was more like 18C, rather spring like.

Stayed home today so the radio club's Internet can be installed at the house (now two incoming here via wire and one via RF). The AC was

I was thinking about getting a DV4Mini (which seems to be very

From what I've read, the OpenSpot is better, and doesn't need a
computer, it is a standalone solution.

    Thanx!
    Will take a closer look!

Several systems have had problems with that lately...you can't
connect to a reflector, or it displays incorrect information.

It could be the way their rig is configured with it, but I don't
    know.

    Thanx, Daryl.

Sounds like there could be trouble with it indeed!

    Hi Tony!

Any ideas what is causing this?
Did you write contents, and it sent out an empty mail?
    (ie was the contents lost?)
Or is it adding additional empty messages?

I see this quit often coming form you ...
Hope you find out soon which program you use is causing this ... and why.

It's not really feasible to track this down, it's so infrequent (vs total number of messages) and random, that the evidence is gone, before I'm aware it's occurred.
