• Fertilizer Net And More

    Tony,

I love running on Linux, no weird MS update screwiness. Windows is a fine V>client/desktop OS, but I much prefer Linux for server work. And I class a V>BBS as a server process.

This old dog doesn't want to learn new tricks...but I'll soon be
taking over the reins of an FTN network...like I needed something else
    to do. :P I keep forgetting the acronym N.A.V.Y. -- N)ever A)gain
    V)olunteer Y)ourself. <G>

Haha as long as you don't end up as fodder for the fertilizer net! :P And V>ouch, sounds like a bad severe storm season over there. We had our worst fir V>season, nationally speaking, ever. I know of no previous fire season where V>there were major fires in 4 or 5 states at the same time! However, the weath V>gods were kind, terminating the fire season early, when moisture started comi V>off the Indian Oceak in early February. The fires were out by the end of the V>month, after many inches of rain.

Well, I already am. Before having cataract surgery 10 years ago, my
visual acuity was 20/2000 -- with severe nearsightedness. I had worn
    glasses for nearly 40 years...and by the time I was 35, I couldn't see
    to drive at night.

One year, I was Talk-In and Packet chairman at the local hamfest (they
don't even do one in Little Rock anymore, for the lack of workers,
vendors, and attendees...never mind the political cliques and infighting
of the clubs). I got 3 totally blind hams to help at Talk-In...and while
I had to take them to and from the restroom, and get their food, it
allowed me to explore the hamfest. But, word got out, and the joke was
"Talk-In is being run by 4 hams who can't see a thing, and they're
giving us directions to the hamfest!!" <G>.

But, the kicker was that it was a Friday night, Saturday day event.
They had sealed off the exits on the west side of the complex. The
overhead parking lot lighting was not working, and they had recently
paved the parking lot, but hadn't striped it. I groaned "I'm lost. I
can't find my way out of this parking lot!!". Instantly, one of the
blind hams keyed the mic, and announced over the wide area coverage
repeater "QST!! QST!! QST!! This is a Talk-Out Net for the Talk-In
Station, who can't find his way out of the Hamfest Parking Lot!!". I interjected (sarcastically) "I want to use your seeing eye dog!!", and
the equally sarcastic reply was "He's tied to the front bumper right
    now!!" <BG>.

In the last few years, when my Mom had to be hospitalized, then going
into a nursing home (this was AFTER the cataract surgery), I got lost in
    the hospital parking decks!! :P

At the last hamfest they had in Little Rock, after finishing up my
work with the license exams, I walked over to where these blind hams
were, and (trying to disguise my voice), asked one of them (but everyone
within earshot, heard the exchange)..."Excuse me, sir?? Can you help me
find my way out of this hamfest parking lot??"...to which he screamed
"DARYL!! YOU RASCAL!!" Everyone nearby howled with laughter, as we
did, too. <BG> But, if you can't laugh at yourself, you have a lot of
    problems.

Locally, it was actually a quiet season. Light fuel leads and less severe V>weather conditions helped.

I know you're not complaining there.

And, they're noting the Gulf Of Mexico Waters are "very warm"...so,
if a tropical storm or hurricane gets in there, and the upper level winds are right, the Gulf Coast is in trouble.

    Not a good look.

Portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama...have been repeatedly slammed by devastating tornadoes in the last few weeks...and it looks
like they're going to get hit again multiple times over the next week.

    Daryl

I'm not sure what mine is, but my distant vision is good, except for a bit of weakness in my right eye, which I've had for at least 30-35 years, but has bever bothered me, unless I'm very tired. But my close in vision is following a typical age related change, and reading glasses are becoming my best friend for reading or working on fine detailed tasks. :) For me, that's OK, because I don't need any vision correction for sport, only for close up work, which tends not to happen in my sports. :) And I doubt I could tolerate contacts. Don't mind glasses.

In the period from April 9-11, 2020...there were over 3000 storm

Well, they couldn't just take me home and drop me off...so, they had to
admit me for observation. With all of my family basically dead and gone (my brother is in worse physical shape than I am, and we don't get along that well), it's nearly impossible to get a driver...and even more so to have someone stay with me.

Logistics - whether you're prepared to learn a different way of doing things. For me, transitioning to a VPS would be straightforward, because I access the current system over SSH - the next room or halfway around the world is not that different once you're doing that. :) For me, that change might allow me to run DOS doors (much more difficult on the Pi here), though I'd be more inclined to setup a door server.

But I run my systems on Linux. Windows doea require more adjustments.

I pay 7 EUR a month for a virtual root server. (2 Xeon Cores, 6 GB RAM, 300 GB RAID HDD, public IPv4, public IPv6/64 subnet)

You do not need to run a computer at home 24/7, you can offload many things to the root server (webserver, mailserver, ...)

The company manages the storage, and replaces HDDs if they get flaky. (They use
    RAID 10)

That can happen just as easily at home. In fact, more easily lost, because when hardware dies at home, it's YOUR problem! Modern VPS providers have means to transfer VMs aware from failing hardware seamlessly. You still need to arrange (i.e. do it yourself or pay for the provider to do) backups of your data, just in case the system gets hacked, or you absently mindedly delete data or screw things up (we've all done that ;) ).

And, thunderstorms are forecast much of the week. But, I'd rather have
wet roofs and wet lawns, to prevent errant sparks from fireworks starting
a fire. I saw yesterday where all of Arizona was under a Red Flag Warning

And believe it or not, extreme isn't even the highest fire danger. We also have "Code Red", which basically means that if anything gets going, it's unlikely to be stopped in the first attack, and if you're in a code red area and potentially exposed, leave early (like the night before or early in the morning - good time for a vacation in the city). You and your house are unlikely to survive a direct hit, no matter how well defended.

been here in Arkansas, fire danger is low statewide, and there are no
burn bans. Now, that may change come August...but for now, those are 2 things we don't have to worry about.

We have fire restrictions for typically 4 - 6 months of the year. Actual length depends on average weather conditions. And on top of that, a Total Fire Ban can be declared on any day where the weather conditions are expected to be particularly bad. We usually get several of those in a year. A TFB can be declared any time it's warranted, regardless of whether the fire restrictions are in place. This year, the fire restrictions ended quite early (I think late March), because we had a lot of late summer rain. The previous couple of years, they ended on the default date of May 1.

Because of the storms, I have stayed up well past midnight the last 2 nights, trying to get computer work done.

    Tony,

But I rest my case. Unlike here, where thunderstorms are much less frequent.

I'm not complaining about the rain. When they start shooting off the fireworks, etc., a stray spark can set a roof or a lawn ablaze. I noted
where the southwest US, and many other areas, are really getting into
drought conditions. Now, come August, we may not be able to buy a drop
    of rain, either.

I wonder how that "extreme" compares to what we call extreme here (mind you, people don't even begin to worry until fire danger gets to one
level below extreme ("severe"). And believe it or not, extreme isn't
even the highest fire danger. We also have "Code Red", which basically means that if anything gets going, it's unlikely to be stopped in the first attack, and if you're in a code red area and potentially exposed, leave early (like the night before or early in the morning - good time
for a vacation in the city). You and your house are unlikely to
survive a direct hit, no matter how well defended.

They issue Fire Weather Watches and Red Flag Warnings...and also have
issued Fire Warnings...the latter for rapidly spreading wildfires, with immediate evacuations ordered.

We have fire restrictions for typically 4 - 6 months of the year.

It varies around here. In April, 1986, our normal rain was 5 1/2 inches -- we only got 3/4 of an inch of rain, and temperatures broke the 100 degree
    mark.

Because of the storms, I have stayed up well past midnight the last 2 nights, trying to get computer work done.

    Ahh, OK.

Plus, if I get insomnia, I figure I might as well do BBS work. <G>

That can happen just as easily at home. In fact, more easily lost, because when hardware dies at home, it's YOUR problem! Modern VPS providers have means to transfer VMs aware from failing hardware seamlessly. You still need to arrange (i.e. do it yourself or pay for
the provider to do) backups of your data, just in case the system gets hacked, or you absently mindedly delete data or screw things up (we've
    all done that ;) ).

hosted at linode.com and costs me exactly $5/month. I've also had
VPS's at FreeRangeCloud and DigitalOcean, same price.

Much more reason NOT to have the fido node at home!
I'd just worry about data getting hacked or lost in the cloud.

Regarding hacking it is exactly as likely as being hacked at home.
You control the measures, do the updates, etc.

Regarding data loss, it is usually more secure than at home.
They do this for a living, and have usually raid10.
As soon as one of the disks gets flaky it will be replaced.

You have to be VERY observant at home to get to the same level of data security.

This is true. But, right now, finances are tighter than a frog's butt underwater. So, a lot of things have to wait until at least next month.

That also includes my printing new ham radio license exam books (I
use the ARRL VEC Exam Maker Software). While I don't test again until September, COVID-19 restrictions may delay that.

Lately, it has been an oncoming train. :P

Well, I've told the Central Arkansas Library System of what my plans are.
I just have to get it approved.

I think that now even the US (after trying all wrong routes first) is

I hope so...but I saw where "Big Pharma" is "expecting to make big bucks"
for this. The huge prescription drug costs are because of all these "drug
reps" buying lunch for an entire clinic's doctors and staff...then doing
their presentation...plus the radio, TV, and print ads.

I *really* hope the death and infection rates go down in the USA (not because of stopping testing, but because tests *ARE* done and they come
    up negative.

Arkansas has had a spike recently, as have several other areas. And, I
had to be tested before umbilical hernia surgery nearly 2 months ago (I'm recovering very nicely from that). But, I swear, I thought they'd anchor
those two long nasal swabs at the base of my brain, and protruding out
my nostrils. I was about to consider the prostate check with the doctor
    having a swollen finger. :P
