• [echoirlp] userdata.txt

    From Bryan Lynch - NM7C@432:1/101 to echoirlp@groups.io on Tue Apr 5 18:37:04 2022
Hopefully this is an easy question.

    What is /home/EchoIRLP/custom/userdata.txt used for?
I searched but had a hard time finding more info.

I have four lines in mine:
    N6SBC-R
    147.315 +94.8
    Hollister, CA sbcara.org
XXXXXXX (This is my EchoLink password, should this be here, or did I enter it during setup by accident?)

    73,

The userdata.txt file was used by the old echostatus program found in the EchoIRLP/bin directory. The echostatus.c source is in the EchoIRLP/source directory. Although there is still code in scripts/echo_syscheck that
compares the callsign in tbd.conf to the one in userdata.txt, I don't think
we need that check or userdata.txt anymore.

Incidentally, just slightly off-topic, "name" and "location" (which are/were the third and fourth lines there) are displayed in various places on EchoLink.
"Location", which is really more like a node description, is what appears next
to each callsign in the Station List, and it's often (automatically) suffixed by conference nodes with numbers indicating current active connections and capacity. "Name" shows up in places such as the status line near the bottom of
the Windows app during a QSO, and in the line-by-line listing of participants in a conference on all platforms. The term "name" is a little loose when it comes to gateway nodes, of course.

Max size for Location is supposed to be 24 characters, and max for Name is supposed to be 18, although some other software has been pushing those limits; the server will now accept up to 30 for Location.

That's good info so far, thanks guys.
Should the EchoLink password be in there on line 4?

I don't see it displayed on either the Android or PC EchoLink client on connect. I just want to make sure it's safe to stay there and I didn't find
    too much documentation on it.

I'm rebuilding a node for my old radio group from 10 years ago in another state. I just want to make sure everything is in tip top shape before I
    ship it back to them.

I don't think anything uses the userdata.txt file in EchoIRLP, except the callsign check in echo_syscheck script. However I have not tested this. My EchoIRLP nodes are at the local NWS office which has been offline and inaccessible since COVID. The install script still populates userdata.txt
    as it does with tbd.conf.

I would leave it as installed. It just duplicates some of the tbd.conf information which is also there.

Good to know the field lengths. I will try to remember to look at the tbd
and tlb source to see if they adhere to those limits.
